"Telling" by Davide Pinardi

Review essay, "Telling" by Davide Pinardi

In our modern society, fast-paced and always busy, take for granted many issues, without entering on the merits, we are convinced that it is unnecessary to even consider where their origin in those certain procedures, or events intrinsic behavior of human beings.

Among these events, the narrative assumes a particular importance, since it is one of the characteristics of the human race.

This may seem obvious, if circumscribe the term "narrative" the tale of fantasy or reality, of one or more specific events, linked together in an organic or without no thread.

Become less self-evident if we assume that a narrative is considered:

" one of the most basic forms of human activity, which allows

construct images of reality
and forwarded to all other human beings.

Therefore, it is one of the operating modes of the cognitive processes that allow us both (groped) than re-order and understand the world, as stated in Roland Barthes, is to socialize this knowledge. "

In light of this statement, we can understand how the narrative is not trivial, as a fundamental pillar of the world as we know it.

Davide Pinardi, with his "Telling - Odyssey Ikea in the world offers us a complete and comprehensive essay on the topic, analyzing the subject in all its aspects.
Modern society is also based on communication and we citizens are the users ("narratee" as we call the author) of these communications ("narratives").

Not only that, according to the author at the same time that we accept the narrative of who we become co-responsible for the transmit ("narrator").

rejecting it, interrupting the transmission of the narrative, we can cancel that particular narrative.

Conversely acceptance, and if we continue to bring back to third, omit or add some parts, we ourselves become the storytellers.

Pinardi says:

" a narrative of truth is acceptable
only if we recognize as questionable "

or which may be a matter of doubt.

Yet the power and a varied bunch of his hired servants, uses the narrative not to circulate information but to guide the people, after having carefully (and intentionally) manipulated.

absolute truths, axioms, dogmas we are served up daily and we are accepting them, do not prevent their spread, making us unwitting accomplices.

The author writes:

" often happens that some big stories - those winners, the dominant ones - they turn into little time in the iron laws, which are becoming offenders or seek to turn in offenders who do not respect them or simply fail to recognize valid. Think of the myths that become truths of faith, the historical scenarios that prohibit representations or alternative method of doubt, the reconstructions do not allow legal alternative hypotheses, the economic analysis required, future climatological scenarios (optimistic or catastrophic) that cause - to those who deny them - the prosecution and at the same absolute denial comedy. "

Yet there is no formula, as a rule to follow to avoid this as it is in the human to interpret own use (consciously or unconsciously) or "ad usum Delphini " (intentionally) the information we receive, that we hold or that we in turn re-transmit, adding or subtracting parts to make more "functional" narrative.

It is for the user of the narrative, the "narratee" evolve culturally to discern, with knowledge of the facts, that the "narrator" tells us.

Davide Pinardi's essay, certainly gives us much food for thought on the subject, allowing us to study the fundamentals of storytelling and help to unravel the complicated world of modern communication.
