"Man of the pigeons' Salvatore Scalisi

" ... we are the sick part of society, a compelling reason to hear the good part, the vast majority, as the privileged. Do not you think? .

This statement is a bit 'the keystone of the novel by Salvatore Scalisi, a very sensitive story about an invisible world, or at least that we, in fact privileged part of society, would did not exist, but whose presence, sometimes annoying, often indifferent, we can to free from all our minimum "poverty" human, comparing them in a "winner" with those who are relegated, often by choice, occasionally by accident, the extreme margins of humanity.

is the world of the homeless, the homeless. Of those people that we meet in the waiting rooms of railway stations or in line behind the door of the soup kitchens, and sleeping on blankets or cardboard boxes that ask you a few pennies in the street to buy a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of wine .

Who among us, meeting, did not prove discomfort or at least uncomfortable?

Who did not draw a balance sheet from that meeting, hoping that their lives never become like them?

is, therefore, that the words addressed to Stephen, the protagonist of the story, by his "colleague", proves truer than ever.

Stephen leads a normal life: he has a job, a family. It does not seem very different from any average Italian.

Nurture, without success, passion for writing, but perhaps because it fails to reach the scope of consent, or perhaps tired of a routine that becomes increasingly heavy, decided to take a well-defined period of detachment from everyday life.

The family agrees to the heavy hard decision, but it hinders, perhaps hoping that the rest of reflection remains as short as possible.

Not so. It will be years before Stephen, mature slowly the idea of returning from his.

In the meantime, learn about the world of misfits and tighten sincere friendship with Charles, his true mentor in This descent to the bottom. The friend also spur him to write, letting him recover, albeit with difficulty, a renewed desire to tell the world that surrounds him.

Companions occasional couple of friends, become the pigeons stationed in the square where Stephen and Charles look at the day unfolds, sitting on the bench. Carlo gives them something to eat and this is the reason for not entirely selfless attendance, while Stefano shows a distrust of birds, however, reciprocated.

As Stephen was about to come to the decision to return by her family, two tragic events that the concern in person, prevent the meeting.

"Man of the pigeons," is certainly a novel that leads us to reflect. The reading flows easily, smoothly and with interest, supported by curiosity to find out if Stephen finally able to return to his life as a "normal".

The finale will leave the reader with a lot of bitterness and perhaps persuade him to look with new eyes those who are invisible, they raise the limits of our affluent society.

Arjian of Sacred Sound - Harmony second Daniela Lojarro

.
confess to remain perplexed by tomes of fiction with numerous pages, the grief comes over me to take a slow and laborious reading of a text wordy and redundant at the end, exhausted, I would entail the book.

It was the first impression by taking his hands "the sacred sound of Arjiam", consisting of 698 pages well.

also feared, as the Author of a woman, running into a literary form of lavish descriptions of characters, feelings and places, came into conflict (I do not judge a misogynist, it's just a comparison of styles) with my literary ideal, concise and simple, typical male.

are pleased to have been denied all along the front and have read a really good novel, that judge, and not surprisingly, with just one word: smooth.

Every page I last year, has aroused my interest, recognizing the functional to the plot of the story and, while not a "fan" of the fantasy genre, characterization historical novel, consistent with the reality of late medieval Europe and the Mediterranean, I was pleasantly surprised.

Written with an admirable propriety of language, and virtually free of printing errors, "the sacred sound of Arjiam" is a novel that deserves to be read because it fascinates and despite being based on mere imagination of the content that has lead to serious reflections on the real world in which we live.

The eternal struggle between good and evil is the theme of the story, but the thirst for power, amplified to the point where it kills love, affection, friendship and humanity, expertly described by the Author is not very different from that craving which leads to some real characters and present every step and every thing that stands in their design, just to gain power.

As well as the doubts, the uncertainties that afflict those who are destined to fight against evil, capture the essence of of those who today in the real world, trying to counter the failures, abuses, inequality, hoping to find harmony on Earth, which is often evoked in the novel.

Honor, loyalty and sacrifice are themes that now leave indifferent humanity imbued with individualism and voted only to consumerism, which is conceived with the "belly" by delegating to others or even relying on domestic appliances such as televisions, thought and the resulting free will. In the novel, the author proposes us these values as essential to doing good.

I will not dwell further in the synthesis of the novel, I'll leave it to readers to take any pleasure in a work truly worthwhile.

only add that in the bottom of the text, the author has included a sort of glossary of characters, places and keywords in the story, very useful to consult while reading.

I want to instead highlight the constant presence in the story of the song.

is also a therapist in Audio-Psycho-Phonology according to the Tomatis method, a rehabilitation therapy of voice and listening.

Interview with the Author

MZ: You can not therefore deny that the song and the sound in general have an important role in your life?

DL: Sound has always and without certainly a central role in my life, accompanying my personal evolution. In fact, at the sound, as music was a source of pleasure emotions. Then, it became the focus of my study and my work, thanks to which I have detailed the technical aspects in relation to the human voice. Finally, approaching the Audio-Psycho-Phonology, I discovered the therapeutic possibilities. In my novel, all these aspects appear to the world of sound along with references to those rites and those religious traditions, those cosmogonic speculations indicate that the sound in the substratum of all phenomena of the universe. The acoustic vibration element, therefore, is also a strictly personal level, the answer to the metaphysical questions about the origin of life.

MZ: As I have just confirmed, in his novel, in harmony with his personal vision, transcendence is represented by the vibration of sacred sound, then an abstract entity, but from the background material, more than spiritual. The presence of Magh then lets assume that the Kingdom of Arjiam hopes are pinned on these actions, I pass the word, wizards, rather than divine intercession. Allow me a very personal question: Do you believe in God? Or rather, what is your relationship with the gods?

DL: In the novel, as in the myths that have inspired us, echoing the primordial sound or vibration creates the world. This means that during the creative process is a materialization of the rays of the primordial sound of sounds that take on a special meaning and represent, as a result, words and phrases contained clear and distinct and, finally, in the course of their concrete, tangible things . The sound animates all things, is the original substance of all things, even where the common man is no longer able to perceive it. The Magh Order dell'Uroburo are people who seek, through knowledge, getting to feel this vibration. I'm not a caste of priests but to the initiated, which can be accessed by personal choice. I would say that the hopes placed in Arjiam are more on the ability to give meaning to the choices you make and knowing how to steer towards a goal (in this case the knowledge of sacred sounds) rather than relying on divine intervention from above like deus ex machina, at least that's my intention. Obviously, this is a fantasy novel is more developed and in-depth look as if it were a test. From what I have said before, we can deduce that I believe in a metaphysical entity, but certainly not a god made in the image and likeness of man. On my relationship with the gods I'll answer with the famous words of Albert Einstein: "There is the Dark? No, the darkness does not exist, only the absence of light. Light we can study, not the darkness. Evil is the result of what happens when man has no love in his heart. " Already in the Gathas, ancient Zoroastrian texts, it says something similar: the human soul is the channel through which the beam passes to illuminate the divine world, yet God reigns on Earth only to the extent that man chooses a free act of his will to transform evil into good, to transform darkness into light.

MZ : Your novel is set in a fantasy realm, the late-medieval character, in which the sacred sound is the entity that gave rise to everything. Although it is a fantasy, told the world that I found lying close to what was the reality of European history, marked by intrigue, by fratricidal conflicts, or directed by the barbarian invasions, to the point of making it almost a kind of historical novel If it were not for the activities of the "magicians" with their magic "Harmony", so ... "anything and just what it seems?

DL: As you rightly guessed, Arjiam story is a transposition of the great historical situations that have characterized our world over the centuries. The type of company is similar to that of the golden age of the republic of Venice or the Italian Lords categorization artisan, merchant and noble families who are competing, more or less openly, the political dominance. The names of the characters have roots in Persian, Mesopotamian, sometimes Etruscan architecture refers to real models as Castel del Monte (Puglia), the Feast of St. Michael (Piedmont), the cloister of Monreale, and the villa at Piazza Armerina (Sicily ), the houses of Pompeii, the library of Fonte Avellana and Gallery Furlo (Marche), the Massi of Matera, churches or rock city of Cappadocia. The colors, descriptions of landscapes and lifestyles are of Mediterranean and Middle East. I chose the Fantasy, although in a very particular perspective, because it allowed me to concentrate on the issues I wanted the most developed: human relationships, the evolution and character growth compared with actual and possible situations, however, or grappling with questions that each of us faces in life the value of love, friendship, loyalty, or are faced with fundamental problems such as the relationship between ethics and science, just here symbolized by the enormous power of magic.

MZ: In the novel I just hit the call to the number eight, which features the architecture of the Castel del Monte, you have just mentioned. That castle has a purpose, neither the defense nor the imperial representative but apparently wants to reproduce the very quintessence of Frederick II of Swabia. As he recorded the symbolism, the occult, the metaphysical extension of your novel?

DL: The symbols of what the specialist is called "Sacred Tradition" have shaped the writing of the novel. I am fond of archeology and Romanesque architecture about which one of the most interesting essays I've read is that of Marius Schneider, 'The stones that sing, "dedicated to the symbols carved in the capitals of some cloisters Catalans. So I decided to entrust the fantastic element in symbols that can be interpreted in different ways. For example, the dragon facing the heroine in one of his tests, it might seem the monster that we are used to meet in every Fantasy saga, at the end of the scene, however, it turns out that the struggle was Fahryon with itself, with the instinctive forces that each of us possesses.

MZ: In the eternal struggle between good and evil, harmony, singing, play a decisive role in his novel, which part may have the reality of a world poised on the brink of self-destruction?

DL: In my novel, I mean not only in reference to the Harmony sound world but also as a quest for balance between emotion, thought and action. It is this inner balance that allows you to know how to listen, then listen and understand, to go towards the Other, the non-self and enter into a relationship with him, therefore, to harmonize with him. This is the role that could have harmony in today's world where you do not listen, do not make the effort to understand the Other, in fact, very often to cover screams the voice trying to assert their views at any cost or not, it grants the media coverage because all that does not pass does not appear on television or in newspapers seems to exist.

MZ: The "bel canto", the opera, is an artistic expression of our unique cultural landscape, but in Italy it is little valued. Perhaps because it is tied to a specific historical moment, the Renaissance, during which write on the walls "Viva Verdi" meant not only appreciate the great teacher, but sing the praises of "Victor Emmanuel King of Italy" and through him to aspire to a national unit which now seems not to interest most anyone. The opera really belongs to the past?

DL: This is a complex question that requires some assumptions. There are bodies all over Italy plays or foundations funded in part by the State, continue to stage Italian opera and opera in general: you can not say that the work is neglected. Rather, it can be said that the public attending the theaters, such as museums, or reading newspapers or books, not as numerous as those providing care to a pop concert or attending a sports stadium. However, this is a problem basic cultural training, yes, unfortunately, very Italian, which should start already in the family, continue in school and be supported by information channels. Keep a low cultural level it means not to give people the means to develop the best of their ability to think for themselves and then make choices without being influenced. As for the famous graffiti in Milan or Venice (curiously the capitals of the regions that today more unification contest) have been exaggerated in their importance in historical perspective romantic post unification. Without this clarification, I do not belong to the opera and unification a past to be buried. The first because it belongs precisely to the cultural patrimony of humanity by denying that they would lose the foundations of being human as such - I remember that, according to the most recent archaeological discoveries, man has built its first 37,000 years ago So well before dell'acciarino flute dating to 32,000 years ago. The music and the appearance of art in general for today's scholars are still an unanswered question because apparently outside the necessity of evolution, however, are here to prove that Man is not just a device that has adapted to life on this planet in purely biological terms. As for unification, the matter does not concern only Italy and I do not bind the answer to the only Italian unification: in fact, regional impulses or centrifuges there have been at different moments in history and not only at European level. The challenge of today's world, almost smothered by globalization, is to capture these special accepting them and allowing them to develop into a supranational body undoubtedly more suited to the historical moment in which we live.

MZ: "The Sound of Arjiam Sacred" was her debut novel. Continuing his new career, flanked to the opera, will remain on the Fantasy or plans to write other novels?

DL: I still working on a project related to the Fantasy, though, according to the opinions of different people, I'd have to leave his very soul of history. I do not know ... maybe it could happen!

Daniela Lojarro In thanking you for your willingness to answer questions and to congratulate her on her novel, The hope of reaping successes both as a writer and as an opera singer.

" Intellectuals under two flags "Nino Tripodi

Without pretending to make the "historical revisionism", the book forgotten that I propose in this article shows that people are somewhat understated for a large part of the " intelligentsia Italian, between the wars of the last century.

course, referring to that period, I refer to that historical period which saw Italy ruled by the fascist totalitarianism.

addition to the easy rhetoric of hagiography or as simple smear exposure, too much abused by both contenders of either party, it is undeniable that during the twenty years of fascist dictatorship, have been established in Italy expressions artistic and intellectual importance, accounting for authentic avant-garde in the cultural world.

Just think of rationalism in architecture or a way of making films, which will be essential to the humus of Neorealism.

Well, many men of culture of that time, born in editorial pages of local GUF (University Groups Fascists), grown at the National School of Cinematography in Rome, located just in front of Cinecittà, or winners in the various sections of Littoriali of culture and art, became, after the fall of fascism, Peak expression of anti-militant, coming to meet with prominent political and government, directing the prestigious national newspapers and became popular directors, actors and successful writers, they are even well-connected in the RAI television studios.

By renunciation of what had been, of their origins in the cultural sense, many of these intellectuals justified the inevitable and frequent as in a dictatorship, have come to define those areas as real nurseries of anti-fascist energy.

Each of us can do a review about it. Will certainly find a lot of material to substantiate this claim. Very little information instead of the opposite view, namely that he preferred quell'intellighenzia Italian, the bad block, stock and barrel jumping on the bandwagon.

Nino Tripodi, in his "Intellectuals under two flags," presents us with a detailed travel and sarcastic, harsh, and penetrating between these protagonists of the cultural landscape Italian in the second half of last century. A travel narrative, accompanied by excerpts from newspapers, magazines or other sources and the time allocated to these intellectuals, where the author points out a marked reverential attitude towards Fascism and its leader, only to show, through other writings, the renewed criticism.

It should be noted, however, that the author was a "witness" of a party, having been Parliamentary Assembly of the Italian Social Movement, as well as director of the newspaper of that party. However, having himself competed at the coasts, it is possible to have those events and those who knew him well participate.

The book deserves to be rediscovered for the potential contribution it could make to a debate to better understand a historical period of our country still important, regardless of the personal evaluation of merit.

" ambassadors "of Roger Peyrefitte

.
The "forgotten book" I want to propose a novel is very unique, somewhat autobiographical character, customs and values with touches of historical chronicle.

The story tells the permanent secretary of the embassy of the young Count de Giorgio Sarre, near the French embassy in Athens, at the dawn of the first events that have shaken Europe and the world later, with the tragedy of the Second World War.

For the young George is the first foreign assignment entrusted to him by Quai d'Orsay, the French Foreign Ministry.

The long train journey from Paris to the Greek capital, enables the author, through his main character, to anticipate what is the career, or the world of diplomacy, but the episodes that will be are taking place during a diplomatic mission to expose the vices, many virtues and, a few, that characterize the embassy at a time when these organs were losing weight, which for centuries had been within the relations between states.

An argument that the author knows well, since he was a diplomat, assigned their own in Athens and in those years.

George tries to juggle the intrigues, rivalries, pettiness and lesser-known actors are in the various officials of the Embassy.

The attendance of two diplomats of other nations, will renew Giorgio memories of a troubled past and a reminder that 'love greek "that certain classical Hellenistic philosophers practiced, acclaimed by two acquaintances, I try many times, without him ever cross the border.

Instead it will be with Frank, the young daughter of the French, that George will touch very bold borders: their passion goes beyond the normal relationship between two people.

George will also be attracted by Rodolfo, a young German diplomat, with whom he shares a spiritual transport for the ancient greek world, but with whom will never get to eat a real passion carnal, though timid it could be the prologue.

a burst of pride for George and the imminent war will separate the two friends, commanded to return to Paris and Berlin.

George will leave Athens, but that city, with its enormous historical legacy, with the ecstasy of the Prosecutor, the shaking of the senses and memories, remain in your heart, forever.

The novel deals with issues such as homosexuality and bisexuality, which is still quite taboo for the time when it was first published in France: 1951.

but addressing them in a polite, with a prose style and a classic, never easy to fall into vulgarity or explicit descriptions, though it remains clear the intrinsic meaning of the story and the message the author wants to convey to reader, much stronger today showing off many of dubious taste and less effective.

very delicate aspects of the subject, such as the young age of grooms object of the attentions of diplomatic acquaintances of the protagonist, may leave as I left, puzzled. For this reason the book should certainly be reserved for adult readers, with a strong critical sense.

The reconstruction of historical events as a corollary of the novel is accurate, and stigmatizes effective diplomacy, to the point where it becomes the main subject with which at the time the book appeared, hiding the other striking content .

The edition in my possession is the pocket edition, published by Longanesi in 1966.

reading the biography of Roger Peyrefitte, you can not then recognize as the young George. Some biographers have as one of the principal authors of the gay world, others consider it only a diplomat and a writer, a time to cry much of the topics covered in his novels, but now quite forgotten.

Roger Peyrefitte died in Paris on November 5, 2000.

" The defense of Giarabub "of Salvatore Castagna

.
Very often, wanting to show the value of deeds, sacrifice and self-sacrifice made by our military during the Second World War, citing El-Alamein or Kefalonia.

indeed were several events during that terrible as to us unfortunate conflict, only that having fought, at least in the first three years, from the "wrong side", according to the widely held and practiced since the conclusion of that horrific tragedy, these incidents have been relegated to mere memory of veterans, recalled undertone or simply ignored.

Yet, despite the complete lack of preparedness of our army, both as training and as equipment or as weapons, despite the lack of belief and ability of the military high command and how it can be disastrous Mussolini was the idea of being able to "throw a thousand deaths on the negotiating table for peace, to sit at the table of the winners, have occurred several feats of arms that have seen our soldiers are victorious or defeated, that does not matter, but the protagonists. Their sacrifice deserves more attention, now that those events are far removed in time and our democracy is ripe, because the fallen, even though "the wrong way", while wearing a uniform rather than another, are still children our people.

Among the episodes of that unfortunate war, there is the defense of the oasis Giarabub.

Giarabub was a tiny cluster of buildings built around the eponymous oasis in the desert Cyrene, Libya, fifty miles from the Egyptian border and three hundred kilometers from the Mediterranean coast.

was the main focus of the politico-religious Senussi, a sort of Islamic brotherhood founded in Mecca in 1837, here is a center of Koranic studies.

I Senussi boom between 1923 and 1931, a revolt against the Italian colonial rule in Libya. Harshly repressed revolt that ended with the capture, trial and sentencing to death of the head of the rebels, Omar Al-Mukhtar, better known as the "Lion Desert, "in fact belonging to the brotherhood Senussi.

To counter the uprising, the Italians stretched out along the Egyptian border as a barrier of barbed wire, as it was established that the guerrillas operating from bases Senussi logistics inland desert of Egypt, to hit the Italian outposts. This barrier extended from the port of Bardia Oasis Giarabub up to 270 km and its construction and patrolling became essential to quell the anti-colonial revolt.

The oasis of Giarabub then at that time became a nerve center of the defensive posture on the border with Egypt and remained so until the eve of the war of 1940.

Major Salvatore Castagna, author of the book suggested, was born in Caltagirone (CT) January 14, 1897. Volunteer in the First World War, was awarded the silver medal for military valor, and was seriously wounded in the head, a few days before the end of that conflict.

soldiers, remained in Libya, participating in military operations aimed at maintaining the Italian rule.

In April 1940 the largest Castagna, was transferred from command of the garrison of Bardia Giarabub, made at that time by 887 staff, including 21 officers, 17 noncommissioned officers, 85 soldiers and 764 soldiers Libyan national.

On March 21, 1941 Lt. Col. Castagna (it was promoted on the merits of war camp) was injured in yet another furious assault of the besiegers. Just hours after the garrison, now to the strong force, had to surrender to the overwhelming forces of Australia and New Zealand.

Colonel Chestnut came back and was imprisoned in Italy until 23 November 1946.

The officer continued his military career, reaching the rank of General of division.

Salvatore Castagna died in Rome on February 3, 1977.

"The oasis of Giarabub is formed with palm trees, gardens, water wells, a wide crack in the desert, the lower the immense plateau of yellow dust in the bottom of which is hidden, even lower than the level of sea. It seems that before appearing in the story, appeared in a dream to Giarabub Senussi. Those in the middle of the night had a vision of those palm trees, water that comes from the sand of that remote island where he founded the Brotherhood could move to live peacefully and prosper. He called the two disciples in the morning, showed them the direction of the winds coming from the sea and said, "You walk without tiring, walk. You will find the place that I saw in a dream, the inspiration of the Prophet. Stop there. I will join you. "

reached the disciples with a caravan of a thousand camels, after traveling for days. It was 1856. The founder of the new religious sect called Mohammed ibn Ali es-Senusi, was seventy years old. Few among his disciples he had never seen her face down over the eyes, shrouded by a veil whenever he went out among men, few were aware of their place of birth, which for some was Mazuna, department of Oran in Algeria For others the Duar Torsc, for others a rough town on the banks of Mina not many miles distant from Mostaganem. It seems that he was descended from prominent Muslim family, who visited Mecca to thirty-five years and entered into the good graces of Sheikh Idris Ben Moroccan, was then taken from the mystical tariqa mohammedia (by Muhammad), fled to escape persecution for Benghazi turkish government , from Benghazi to El Zaviet Ezziat and from here, After the dream of that night, Giarabub.

oasis, at the time, there were only white flies petulant, swarms of mosquitoes, jackals, robins, chameleons, snakes bicornuate, frogs croaking in the ponds and scorpions. Giarabub was only one place of water, where they will remain rare caravans, pilgrims to Mecca, a junction of tracks, from Gialo from Kufra, from Siwa to Tobruk. Deserted in the desert, no one lived.

The crowd of newcomers fell on the sand, folded his arms in the chest; gripped the wrist of his left hand between the thumb and forefinger of the right, and prayed. He said with fervor that phrase a hundred times: "May God forgive," three hundred times this one: "There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is the messenger of Allah at every glance and every breath, for a number of times that only the knowledge of God embraces "the last hundred times:" God bless our master Muhammad, the unlettered Prophet, his family and his friends, and grant them health. " Some drew on the sand of the plant zauia (within the Brotherhood), a large building divided into three parts: the school where they were taught the young, the home of the brothers; the guest house for guests who would come to visit. Would provide the nourishment to their sect, on the first day with rice and camel meat, wheat and barley with the second, the third with dates, the rest of the stay should have been provided for its own account. Then they began to build. It was all people who did not wear the rosary hung around his neck, did not play drums or other musical instruments at the meetings, there was dancing, did not smoke, did not sing, did not drink coffee. This imposed the rule, which prohibited further luxury clothes, except for women, which, hairdressers and embellishments, favor the propagation of the species for the growth of the forces of Islam.

Giarabub was born. "

Salvatore Castagna He began with these words, immediately after the introduction, in his" The Defence of Giarabub "(Edited by Longanesi in 1950), describing the place that saw the undisputed star, along with the soldiers who had the highest regard and respect for their commander, including Libyans, the page has deliberately forgotten, but equally epic of the war events of the last world war.

Giarabub recovery from the plane (Source: Wikipedia)

.

The book covers, in a sort of diary of events have occurred, but in story form, the eleven-month stay in the oasis of Giarabub author describes in particular the continuing attacks and counter-Italian allies in the first nine months of the war, 10 June 1940 to March 21, 1941, during which, the only bulwark that the first interest British counterattack drove the Italians out of Cyrenaica even, Giarabub represented a real thorn in the side of the advance of the English the command of General Wavell.

Castagna, in detail, tells how the defense tactically arranged oasis, placing observation posts and pillars all around, handing out the little machine guns (which all Swarzlose Austrian war booty of the previous war) and even fewer heavy weapons (machine guns and cannons) and formed several small warehouses for ammunition and fuel. To counter any breakthroughs of enemy troops, organized platoons of reinforcement, ready to lend a hand to the front-line soldiers in distress. But the most effective device was mounted on the few vehicles available, some cannons and machine guns, creating rapid motorized columns and armed to against possible attacks by armored cars and armored vehicles. To the point of effectively combat patrols often the much vaunted British Long Range Desert Group, used for fast action against the Italian lines.

In a series of attacks and counterattacks, interspersed with fewer and fewer of the planes from landing on the adjacent track carrying supplies and mail, only link with the motherland, Castagna tells the story of the soldiers under him by citing often the names. Quote ol'eroismo sacrifice some of the others. Also reserved words of admiration for Libyan soldiers who fought with honor until the end, showing attachment to Italy, with all due respect to the claims of Colonel Gaddafi.

The stubborn Italian resistance, despite the growing shortage of supplies, the constant pounding of artillery and air attacks on British and the pressing of the Commonwealth of its infantry, often backed by armored cars and tanks, it cost a lot sacrifice, to both sides. In the last attack, the decisive one of the March 21, 1941, from the Italian side had nine officers, five hundred non-commissioned officers and enlisted men killed, while the wounded were at least three hundred and fifty.

Castagna concludes his book, dedicated to the Fallen these words:

"And now that I could tell your deeds, my thoughts turn to you, glorious Giarabub fallen, and injured and all Defenders of the oasis.

Your sacrifice was not in vain. You have fought with faith and honor for their country.

My dear comrades in arms, before closing this short diary, let us unite again at the observatory, a landmark number. We look to the north, we remember the Principals of the strenuous resistance of Sceferzen, Maddalena, Uescechet el Heir, Garn ul Grein. Let's go back and look Garet el Barud, which reminds us of the value of many episodes. Then, turning to look at tour d'horizon, we stop at Melfa, Garet el Cusco, Barra Arrascia, el AAMR, Garet el Nuss, Fredga, Devil's Race, Bu Salama, Bir Tarfui, Saniet Deff and remind us that ten months of constant struggle.

We now follow the line of homeland defense, and look at the various locations of landmarks, where they were often the strongest concentration of enemy artillery. Finally, let us pause in the strand number one and recall the glory and value of our Dear brothers, who fought the fight that extreme for several days, inch by inch, the ground to the enemy.

That cornerstone is the "graveyard of heroes Giarabub" a cemetery without crosses and without that flag that flew for more than ten months the oasis. But we now see it as before. "

the situation in Libya is becoming increasingly desperate and Italy is going to look .. our government is indignant, takes a strong position .. can not .. the financial mess undertaken with Gaddafi prevent him .. can only remain at the door and watch .. see thousands of young people who are fighting for their future, who die for a country that is free, which has also been isolated from western complicity and lately especially Italian.
Gaddafi is blackmailing us and we, Westerners, knowing the smell of money and the sweetness of power we let him go. let them kill innocent young people. children. old. women. our government does not move. Eni's oil is too important. UniCredit money in! Are you joking! if they leave the Libyans everything collapsed.
and meanwhile the dignity and freedom in the blood drowned, buried by the rubble of destroyed houses.
but this does not count. if they die there, there is a problem that can land on our shores. some people think. indeed. not think. offends his own mind, which certainly can not be intelligent.
shame.
they go.

thoughts together

150 years of national unity.
Country: totality of individuals linked by the same language, history, culture, interests, esp. as aware of this common heritage. Dictionary Zanichelli.
important is the second part of the definition: spec. as aware of this common heritage . Italians are aware of?
judging by what is happening lately it seems just the opposite, but also going back in time does not change: a true national consciousness in Italy there is ever been. ever.

that more than anything else unites a people is the language . the linguistic unity has always sought since the late Middle Ages, always, however, the common language was put to use almost elite (note, you do not want to compare the vulgar Latin). fact is that the vernacular, which became the national language, was formed in a specific area circumscribed by a small group of people. Italy of the literati. Italy of the people, excuse me, the rest of the land of the people remained in their old dialects that over the centuries have suffered various influences to come to us, the myriad pieces of a puzzel unintelligible that extends from the French and tedescheggianti deep valleys of the north to the Arabian ports in Sicily.

can tirelessly extol the heroism of our ancestors who unified earth, but you certainly can not hide that true nationalism or patriotism bottom there never was.
Italy was made by the mind, but the people, the true substance of which is a country, did not participate personally in this unit and therefore not hear her own.
the unit made it big: writers, poets, great leaders .. great cultural authorities financed the foreign Garibaldi action or, indeed, arrived in Italy to fight in person, or even just to watch the fate of one thousand. . but the people, where was all this?
was where it exists today. almost indifferent. the unit find themselves wanting to celebrate and the "thinkers" that segment of the population that does not feel much for Italian patriotism or love for the land , but as moral continuity of the long tradition of artistic and philosophical literature that has always characterized the peninsula. all those whose province they never or almost lived. all the people who strive to understand it, but not live.
this is not to say they commit any sin or failure, the fact is that Italy is divided. there is nothing to be done. Italy is not united.
there is a gap (even ideological, thought) between Italy 's idea and Italy of real . two places are poles apart, not touching, perhaps touching, but never touching.
Italy 's idea is precisely that Italy's those who tell it, the watcher, that the tear with their misrule (here it comes from 'idea and enter the empty thought), while the other Italian, one of real is the country where every average citizen lives his daily life lasts. here, these two italie do not know at all, seem by their nature incompatible with each other. but only because we are in Italy. only here the average citizen can not come into contact with a culture that is not the non-television culture .
these two worlds are now more than ever in opposition and not everybody wants to stir from its axis.
is clear that the planet which should be the first to leave its orbit and the other is to go against Italy 's idea, called to recapture, or perhaps to win (finally) that people who have lost so much of its history. indeed. that nothing has experienced in its history, experienced by others in their place. for their sins, that decisions of others.
is Italy 's idea start unify this country today and unite under one banner a nation conscious of their common heritage. Italy

I'm not quiet revolution

today in Italy the vast majority of the population is not happy. does not pursue even more happiness. the end of every man, philosopher or worker who has, since he set foot on this earth.
today's happiness is not there it does nothing, or at least we got sick of chasing: it is seen as unlikely a mirage, an unattainable goal. you have no more conscience of what happiness really , each has its own conception of happiness, but now all (or almost) lost his own.
so you end up settling of tranquility.
I'm comfortable within my own home, without any discomfort that may damage the warmth with which the selfish pleasure I wrap.
this is most of our country today.
the political dimension and, therefore, that actively participates in community life is abandoned, to the relief for nearly everyone. do not let on to pray for others who may take their place, that it duty to all citizens in the administration of common public affairs. in exchange for the citizen, who betrays his duty calls tranquility that declines in not more than freedom from oppressive bureaucratic state , security of person from the brutal violence of foreign invaders, can live their lives caring about what happens around .
selfish a conception of public life.
this is the ideal setting for parties of today. a citizen who embodies the voting pattern of the ignorant champion of peace: a person who gives them dreams, illusions, which gives the impression of a real improvement of life along that road, ignorant selfishness, which, of course, the voters are convinced and wheedling seen as a private law absolute, undeniable that the man works and wants to live his life.
vote loses its absolute meaning, as the highest expression of popular will and becomes a bargaining chip that does not look further for a future political plans, or ideas, beliefs, becomes the object of barter, a rating party security in exchange for a security that never actually comes, just because there is no security problem.
vote and voting is repeated in the farce of the false and illusory dangers freedom won.
the road to a country that can be defined is still long.
150 years? year zero.
